Reflection
Luke 9:23–26 must be read in light of the events that immediately precede it, beginning with Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Christ in verses 18–20. This moment serves as a turning point in the narrative of Luke’s Gospel. As Jesus prays alone—a motif Luke often emphasizes—the disciples join him, and he asks them a pointed question: “Who do you say that I am?” Peter responds with a bold and true declaration: “You are the Christ of God.” This confession confirms the growing awareness among the disciples of Jesus’ unique identity and mission.
