John Wesley’s sermon, based on Romans 8:15, addresses a pivotal theological concern: the transformation of the human soul under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Wesley distinguishes between two “spirits” mentioned by Paul: the spirit of bondage, which is marked by fear and legalistic striving, and the Spirit of adoption, which brings liberty, joy, and intimate relationship with God.
